In the late 1960s my grandfather was approached for backing by a food scientist, from that the Huligaard-Mavis Coffee Company was born; the world’s first manufacturer of freeze-dried coffee. They were successfully supplying restaurants in the Los Angeles area when the president of General Foods made the public announcement that they had invented a product that would revolutionize the American kitchen; freeze-dried coffee. Within weeks the Huligaard-Mavis Coffee Company had closed its doors and the machinery was sold for scrap.
