Figure Outing at Schloss Machern

As part of Figure Outing at Schloss Machern I am exhibiting two new works Nowhere To Run and Sie Oben, So Unten (As Above, So Below).

Figure Outing, 13th of July, Schloss Machern at 2 pm

The romantic landscape around the Castle Machern, an English garden, a knight tower and garden sculptures. Painting was a long time servant of aristocratic representation and the medium for the perpetuation of the self-image of the nobility. What is the potentiality of the historic spaces of the castle for contemporary art?

Artists from New York Academy of Art Matthew Comeau, Esteban Ocampo, Camila Rocha, Hannah Stahl and Meisterschüler of Professor Neo Rauch Sebastian Burger, Stefan Guggisberg, Marie Carolin Knoth, Mandy Kunze and media artist Piper Mavis from Los Angeles create site-specific art works and put already existing works in dialog with the castle. This poses on the one hand the danger to stylize the contemporary art for decoration, while on the other hand offers the chance to re-read the place and the art works as well as to generate new meanings through this encounter.

curated by Kristina Semenova

Opening Hours: 14th – 20th of July, 11 am – 6 pm
adress: Machern, Schlossplatz 1

The Project Figure Outing is a cooperation between Etching Studio of Maria und Vlado Ondrej und  LIA Leipzig International Art Programme. We thank LIA main partner BMW, New York Academy of Art and Consulate of the United States Leipzig as well as the Castle Machern for their kind support.

Figure Outing, 13.

– 20. Juli, von 11 – 18 Uhr
Adresse: Machern, Schlossplatz 1

Das Projekt Figure Outing findet in Kooperation mit Radierungsatelier Maria und Vlado Ondrej und dem LIA Leipzig International Art Programme statt.  Wir danken dem LIA Hauptpartner BMW, der New York Academy of Art und dem US- Generalkonsulat Leipzig für ihre freundliche Unterstützung.

Residency in the Arctic Circle in 2015!

I am thrilled to announce that my project proposal to create a new artwork(s) in the Arctic Circle has been accepted. I will be joining a group of fellow artists and scientists on the October 2015 expedition, living and working “aboard a Barquentine Tall Ship while sailing the waters of the international territory of Svalbard, an Arctic archipelago just 10 degrees latitude from the north pole.” I am very, very excited and grateful to the judging committee for allowing me such a unique opportunity to realize my piece.

I am pleased to announce two new concurrent blogs that I will be updating once a week. These two blogs can each be viewed as a separate ongoing photographic series.

The Hollywood Ending

chair_site_blog
In 2012 I began the process of sorting through and packing up my grandparent’s home after the death of my grandmother. It was a very large house with an attic, a basement and many closets –full of souvenirs of lives no longer lived. I sorted through most of the house alone late into the night. As I sifted through old grocery lists sandwiched between private detective reports and old Christmas cards I realized that I was actually sorting through a veritable time capsule decades in the making. A snapshot of the two of them but also a snapshot of an era and a way of life that would not be repeated. As I unearthed mementos that become useless in death it struck me again and again how fitting it was that my grandfather’s favorite film was Frank Capra’s You Can’t Take It With You. My grandparent’s had truly lived the American Dream born into rural Mid-Western working-class lives and dying in a mansion in Beverly Hills. All the money in the world though couldn’t have prolonged their health and shortened their dying. The happiest of lives and love stories all end tragically as the Hollywood Ending always ends decades before the actual end. Afterwards someone else comes along and decides what of your life is worth saving and what souvenirs will fabricate your history.

So Long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, Goodbye included in ReMap 4, Athens, Greece

So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, goodbye... (Badwater)

I’m pleased to announce that my piece So Long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, Goodbye… is included in the KYPSELI exhibition at Re:Map 4
September 8-30 Athens, Greece (more details below)

The piece is comprised of thirty-five images of semaphore spelling out So long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen, Goodbye documenting a performance over two days in May 2012. Each word was shot at a different location in Death Valley, California, from the bottom of Ubehebe Crater and Zabriskie Point to Badwater (officially the hottest place on Earth).
a slide show of the entire piece can be viewed by clicking the link below:

Hope you are able to attend.
best wishes,
Piper Mavis

KYPSELI is an independent publication initiated by a company of creators who live in or care for the neighborhood of Kypseli in Athens. The publication follows on the DIY tradition of fanzines, it is printed black and white on low gram paper; it comes out every two months in an edition of 300 numbered copies and is distributed independently at selected spots in the city of Athens and abroad. The subject matter varies but always relate –in a concrete or abstract way- to personal experiences of the neighborhood and the city and illustrate the ways and mores of a beehive –the literal meaning of the word “kypseli” in Greek- of artists who live and work in this area of the city.

Contributors and guests from Greece and abroad participate in the show with small pieces, interventions, editions and printed matter. A series of live events are programed as part of the show.

The show will be open September 8-30. The exact dates and times for the live events will be published every week on our websites. The fourth issue of the fanzine and limited copies of previous issues will be available at the venue.
